Synopsis |
Babar, a Pakistani immigrant left with nothing, finds as he comes out of jail that his wife, Hina, and son, Ali, had left their home. Reluctantly, he seeks help from his good friend Numan, and learns that Hina wants to divorce him. To salvage the marriage, Babar tries to find work to prove that he is ready for a new life. Yet, his lack of education, criminal record and ethnicity mean constant discrimination in Hong Kong. At one interview, he learns that driving for riding apps pays well, but the activity is targeted by the police. Taking a risk, he borrows a car from Numan and begins his career as a desperate app driver on this illegal enterprise. However, his unruly appearance turns off many customers and earns him nothing but negative reviews. To save his driving career, he heeds the advice of the app instructor and shaves off what Muslim men consider sacrosanct, his beard… |

I am glad that they chose 'Have A Nice Day' as part of the festival. I met a lot of Asian filmmakers in New York, they inspired me in many ways. Since my short film is about the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, they understand my story very well, as most of the Asians are recent immigrants in the USA. Apart from the screening, the film festival also organised many events to connect all filmmakers. Not to mention how many art events, museums and art cinemas in this city. I enjoyed this trip very much. The film festival attracted many Asian audience in New York, which surprised my a lot. In this trip, I got to know many Asians living in the USA, for example, an old Hong Kong lady who moved to New York 50 years ago. This helps me to understand this country and how difficult for an Asian to succeed in the film industry."

The festival organised different networking events and cultural tours for filmmakers were beneficial in terms of cultural exchange. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a very beautiful country with very complicated history, we even visited Sarajevo, which experienced siege 25 years ago. I had a lot of discussions with people from Serbia, Russia, etc. I am glad that they liked my film very much. They found the story about the immigrant family very moving. They also invited me to show my short films in their countries. Some of them even proposed to co-produce documentary.
Most of the films and filmmakers at the festival were from Balkans district, which was very special for me. The four-day trip was too short for me to know the country thoroughly, but the people in the town and staff from the festival were really friendly and helpful. Last but not the least, I would like to thank the jury panel for awarding me the Special Award, this is the first award this film ever received!”
